A fine line along your lashes can beautifully define your eyes. Kajal creates a soft edge that is easy to blend, while eyeliner gives you a more precise finish. Discover how to apply both with confidence.

Know the difference
Both define your eyes, but each creates a different effect.
Kajal is ideal for subtle definition close to the lash line. Gently smudge the colour with a small brush or cotton bud to create a softer transition.
A good choice if you prefer a subtle or slightly smoky eye look.
Eyeliner creates a more distinct outline. Use it for a fine line along the upper lashes or build a slightly more striking flick.

Getting started: Begin with a thin line as close as possible to the upper lashes. You can make it thicker or extend it slightly at the outer corner later.
Before you begin
Let your eye cream absorb before applying make-up. If your eyelid still feels damp or oily, wait a little longer.
Support your elbow on a stable surface. This makes small movements along the lash line easier to control.
Pause to check the line with your eyes open. The two sides do not need to match to the millimetre.
Soft definition
Kajal is a good starting point when you want to define your eyes without a sharply drawn outline.
Place the kajal pencil just above the upper lashes at the outer corner. Work in short strokes rather than drawing one long line.
Carefully connect the short strokes. For a more understated look, make the line finer towards the inner corner.
Lightly sweep a small, clean brush along the upper edge. The line will look softer while the colour stays close to your lashes.
Precise definition
An eyeliner line does not need to be bold. Even a narrow line close to the upper lashes adds definition.
Position the eyeliner close to your upper lashes. Draw several short strokes from the outer corner towards the middle of the lid.
Join the strokes carefully into a narrow line. It can be slightly stronger at the outer corner and taper towards the inside.
For a subtle wing, draw a short extension at the outer corner first, then connect it to your existing line.
Look straight into the mirror. Add more colour only where you would like greater definition.
From subtle to striking
Draw a thin kajal line along the outer third of your upper lashes and gently soften its upper edge.
Draw a narrow eyeliner line along your upper lashes. Keep the inner end fine and add a touch more definition towards the outer corner.
Apply kajal along the outer lash line and blend it with a little darker eyeshadow for a softer, more intense transition.
Common mistakes
Avoid trying to draw the entire line in one movement. Short strokes are easier to position and connect.
Begin with a fine line close to your lashes. You can always build up the colour afterwards.
Avoid stretching the skin outwards as you apply the line. Otherwise, its shape may change when you release the lid.
At the end of the day
Remove kajal and eyeliner thoroughly before bed. Avoid vigorous rubbing and choose a cleanser intended for use around the eyes.
